7. Their Eyes Were Watching God

Ch.6-10

My hopes for Jody and Janie had completely gone down the tubes by the end of chapter 6. His utter disrespect angered me, as did Janie's silence. I was impressed with Jody when he bought the mule, but then disgusted by him when he forbade Janie of attending the mule's mock funeral. I was again outraged when he slapped her, and continued to limit and suppress her thoughts and contributions to conversation and interactions with others.

It’s not until Jody is literally on his deathbed that Janie is finally able to stand up to him and not only free herself of his domineering hold on her, but tell him just how imperfect he really is. When he dies she must mask her feelings of joy and independence so as to not raise suspicions.

But after the 6 month mourning period, she wears white, as custom to open herself up to suitors. But each advance is rebuffed because she is too fond of the independence, such feelings made me think how alike Queen Elizabeth I had felt centuries ago. It’s not until the illustrious Tea Cake finally makes an appearance that the story finally links back up to the mysterious beginning.
